The Lake District National Park in Cumbria is one of the most spectacular places on earth to visit. Your experience of the Lake District will differ though depending on the timing of your visit. The Lakes are beautiful in any month but my recommendation is to visit in either April or September. The reasons for this are the weather and the crowds.
As the Lakes is a mountainous region that’s close to the Irish sea, the question isn’t if it will rain, but when and how much? Lake District weather is often a conversation topic all year round. October to March tend to be rainy months as, surprisingly, so do July and August. Bear in mind though that it can rain heavily at any time. It’s also common for it to be raining in one area and not raining in another town just a few miles away.
Peak tourist influx tends to be concentrated around the summer months and UK bank holidays such as Whitsun. Given that the Lake District is just a small rural area and that roads are generally narrow, travelling
at peak time can be stressful. You’ll also note that the cost of Lake District hotels and Lake District cottages rise significantly as demand soars. So choose April or September to visit the Lakes. You will usually be reasonably warm and dry and you will not have to deal with vehicle traffic and masses of people.
