Lots of businesses make use of the stock market to help earn profits, some directly and some indirectly through fund investments etc, and many would swear by it. Holders of these shares have a stake in that company and earn annual dividends which can go up or down depending on the company performance. Most of the penny stocks will be held by insurance companies and large investers, but some will be held by individuals who depend on the annual dividends to supplement their income or pension. These individual investers will normally outnumber the large investers by a considerable amount, but their influence on the company will be very limited as they will be holding collectively a much smaller number of shares than the large investers. This lack of influence will be of little consequence as long as the company is paying good dividends.
