There’s lots of discussion online over the last year on the use of Paid Links for search engine optimization. Google has started to penalize websites that they find to have paid links and have invited webmasters to tell on their competition?

Because Google’s algorithmic formulas lean heavily on linking, they don’t have so much control when people use paid links and have declared that it is ‘unethical’.

Personally, I don’t see much of a difference between purchasing links on paid directories (which is considered ethical), and buying links on other domains. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no doubt the debate will continue regarding whether seo link building is ethical or not.

In majorly competitive markets, it can be extremely difficult to get high rankings without using paid links because Google and Yahoo! place a lot of value on relevant, high PR one-way links. A normal term is ‘renting a link’. While there are a few services that offer to sell a permanent link, the vast majority of links are rented on a month-to-month basis.
