One of the finest chess sets that I have ever experienced was crafted by an artist that my younger brother worked for. It had a beautiful wooden board and the chessmen were of moulded pewter. This was such a cool set not entirely for the artistry but also for the idea of the civil war chess set, which appeared like a scene from the Lord of the Rings movie, full-scale with dragons, wizards, elves, dwarfs and medieval looking castles.

The one set of chessmen were electro copper plated, while the opposing chessmen were the color of the pewter. I never got to play on it, but we did have the joy of putting it up at the art shows where my sister would try to hawk their bosses work.
