Number plates have always been the primary way of identifying a vehicle. In the uk there has since 1963 been the peculiarity of being able to determine the age of the car by it’s number plates. Initially it was claimed that this was so police could easily identify which cars were subject to the recently introduced mot test, but in 2001 when the new numbering system came in they still kept the age identifier.
